By now, we have all heard about the romaine lettuce safety issues and the corresponding recalls. It is good news that brands and retailers recognize the need to put more efficient instruments in place to promptly react to outbreaks. However, one party missed in this equation is the consumer. Until the possibility of outbreaks is ruled out completely, we need to make sure that we can empower consumers to make their own educated decisions. We need to inform consumers about the point of origin for each component of the final product.

With incidents like this happening again and again, consumers become more and more anxious about products they are buying in stores. An effort needs to be made for consumers to regain their confidence.

Brands, consumers, and the C.D.C. are putting increased pressure on manufacturers and retailers to clearly label where their product is grown. Consumers will surely penalize those who do not provide this information.
